- Search for "world political map". Look at the first map that comes up... what does it emphasize? What is centered on the map? What is at the top of the map? What appears to be distorted and how is it distorted? How is the map designed - color, arrangement, naming, etc.?
- Search for "world physical geography map". Look at the first map that comes up... what does it emphasize? What is centered on the map? What is at the top of the map? What appears to be distorted and how is it distorted? How is the map designed - color, arrangement, naming, etc.?
- Search for "world hunger map 2015". Look at the first map that comes up... what does it emphasize? What is centered on the map? What is at the top of the map? What appears to be distorted and how is it distorted? How is the map designed - color, arrangement, naming, etc.?
- Comparing the three maps above, what do they have in common? What would you describe as their perspective or world view? In your opinion, is one more valuable than the others? Why?
Second, please take some time to look at the two world maps below. Answer these questions in the same Google Doc.:
- What perspectives and/or biases does each map represent, in your opinion? What evidence do you have to justify your opinon
- What knowledge claims (2nd order, please) do you feel are made by the images based on the perspectives/biases you named?
- Create a knowledge question based on the either one or both of the maps.
